The WPRA would just like to thank the Springboks of 2015; in their hunt for Rugby World Cup glory; for the special memories that they created for the WPRA. We were extremely honoured to be apart of their preparation and build-up leading towards their Rugby Championship and of course the RWC in England later this year. Here is a small token of appreciation and acknowledgement from us as an academy for the chance to train with and against our nations pride. We wish you all the best and “Ons Vir Jou” Bokke!

As part of the their preparations towards the Rugby Championship and the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the WP Rugby Academy spent three days this week assisting the Springboks at their training camp in Cape Town.

In what was a fantastic experience for the WPRA players, these aspiring professionals had to mix it up with their heroes and mentors this week, in three days of training at the Cape Town Stadium.

The young players and WPRA coaches helped the Springbok players and coaches in plays and drills that were designed to simulate game-situations and game-intensity at times.

With some drills requiring tackling, contact and speed to create the desired tempo and conditioning elements, the WPRA boys were at times put through their paces both on attack and defence as well as in skill specific drills.

“The WPRA players loved every minute of it and feel very privileged to have been part of the Boks preparations,” said Keith Milner, a Director and coach at the WPRA.

“The Springbok coaching staff, management and players were all fantastic and made us all feel very welcome and appreciated with the Bok players and coaches taking the time to lend their experience to the WPRA players and coaches at every opportunity. We learnt a lot in the three days of being part of the camp.

“The WPRA creates opportunities like this in order to further the development and inspire the players that WP Rugby have recruited as part of it’s development structures. We believe in continuing to inspire young players and opportunities like this are fantastic for the young players as they learn so much in terms of how to be a professional.”

Also part of the Sprinigbok camp was Dave Alred, the renowned High Performance coach who amongst others, was Jonny Wilkinson’s kicking coach up until the end of his career and advisor to the 2003 World Cup-winning England team.

The Springboks take on the World XV at DHL Newlands this weekend before starting their condensed 2015 Rugby Championship campaign ahead of the World Cup in England (September-October).

This week we trained with the one and only two time world cup winners and pride of the nation The Springboks. When an opportunity such as this presented itself to us an academy, we didn’t blink twice to jump at the opportunity to train with and against Bokke. With every boys’ aspiring dreams and goals to eventually play at the highest level and represent their country being at the pinnacle of their hearts; this truly was the uniquest and fastest ways that they got to experience what it would be like to be a “Bok for a day”.

The sessions were better than we could have ever imagined and we got the chance to work alongside the coaching staff as well as the players and learn some exciting new tricks of the trade. From the moment the boys trained with the Boks they got to experience the intensity of an international athlete and what he brings to a session; and how they approach different scenarios. It was eye-opener for most boys and a learning curve for the better. You don’t get much better than Etzebeth and Beast double teaming you in a tackle and surviving the hit! The Boks got to really push the boys to their limits and we were more than happy to watch the likes of Matfield run the lineouts, Steyn run the plays and even a sneaky sidestep from Cornal Hendricks.

We are extremely proud of how the boys handled the intensity and skill level of the 3 days and a lot of them really worked hard to put the kind of quality out on the field which we hold so high at the WPRA. This will be a major highlight in our year and possibly for the rest of our history.

WPRA 2015 Graduate from the UK Luca Slowik; came to us having had numerous injuries in the past season which hampered his progress through the ranks at Bristol Rugby Club. He worked hard on getting back his fitness and Conditioning with us at the WPRA and steadily progressed through hard work on and off the field. Our approach to the way we condition players and prepare them for professional rugby helped provide him with the stepping stone to improve his confidence and athletic ability which we saw improved his all-round game. Having had the opportunity to train with the Stormers and against them at Newlands and at the HPC; it helped him lift his game awareness and vision of how it is done at the highest level. He has now returned to his club in the UK and left the WPRA a better more rounded person and player alike having experienced something only a few ever get to do in their lives at the

WPRA. We wish him all the best in the future and know that he will go on to achieve his dreams.

Our boys were involved in a trial match in Stellenbosch on Friday; to finalise any spots and uncertsainties the U19 coaches had before they select their squad for the up and coming U19 Currie Cup Tournament. Combined with WP Club Rugby players, Western Province Rugby Institute players and our own; the setting was set for a very unstructured environment (rugby wise). Lots of flowing exchanges of the ball and almost no team had the upper hand throughout the game. Both defences showed great character and a lot of players really pushed hard in their pursuit to make the squad. The boys go on holiday now and will look forward to a much needed rest before they return to compete for their U19 spots.

Yesterday we wre invited by the Stormers to train together with them as part of their preparation for the up and coming fixture aginast the Cheetahs. The oppurtunity to train with the best team in the country was taken with  both hands.

The session was exciting and interactive with Stormers Captain Duane Vermeulen taking the leading coaching role for our team to run against the Stormers. The Stormers bench players joined our team for the session as we ran in the attacking and defensive maps. This interaction made for a truly unique experience.

With Paul Treu and our own Anton Moolman directing our plays we had a solid platform for which to impress the senior side contributing to a productive session for the Stormers.

After our field session the the entire WPRA squad were given a tour of the HPC by current  Stormers and HPC manager Chippie Solomons. He took us through the facility showing us unique WP Rugby traditions and all the routines the players go through on a daily basis. A truely unforgettable day that we hope will happen again.

Our players left there motivated and inspired with a new outlook on exactly what it takes to “Realise Their Dreams”

Thanks to all the Stormers players and coaching staff for having us down and accepting us as one of their own so easily.

The Stormers have invited us down for training session tomorrow at 09:00am in preparation for their local derby against the Cheetahs from Bloemfontein. This is an exciting prospect for us; as our boys will experience first hand where their ‘heroes’ train and prepare as professionals. We look forward to the chance at showcasing our talent and to further enhance the experience of squad against a highly professional outfit.
